Bit of a warning - it can happen so easily!

People who routinely bank their beds up during the day, and don't have rubber mats down - please be careful if you have a horse in your stable.
This morning, a youngster on our block was in her box waiting to go out. Owner had put the bed up and rugged her but not turned out yet because it was still too dark. She spooked in the box, slipped and went down on the concrete. I think she is quite sore now - she was hobbling quite a bit when I left to go to work.
It has nearly happened with me too: put my lad in an empty stable to muck his out and he spun round and nearly went down. Fortunately he was ok and found his feet quickly.
I have seen twice now how easily it can happen. Now, if my lad is in a box with no bed or matting, I tie him up like I would if he was just on the yard. You can't be too careful.

I can relate to this! 5 years ago my horse Sammi slipped as he went into his stable because it was wet in front of his door. He fell in the doorway and the peg that the door latch clicks into, punctured his side through a muscle, and ripped a massive flesh hole in his side bigger then your hand!!!

The peg was set further back in the wooden posts then the stable wall, so it was nearly flush with the wall, and so the farmer assumed it was safe and wouldn't catch the horses. But because of the angle of how Sammi fell, together with the weight and hard impact of half a tonne falling, it did prove dangerous! So the farmer has put a rounded off, wooden block around all of the pegs to rpevent this happening again! xx

OOh, that's nasty!!!

My horse did this last year - was about to move him outside I think he just went smack straight down on his knees! Was quite scary as I was infront of him by the door and thought for a second he's just collapsed!

He ws a bit shocked by it and think he hurt his knees a bit as he held them up alternately and did that pathetic look! Thankfully he was fine but I am now careful that I throw the clean straw back down again if I've mucked out and for any reason am tacking up etc in the stable. I usally tie him up outside.

Sister has put rubber matting down in her stable (to save on her bedding/mucking out time really - her horse is dirty, mine isn't!) and i am tempted to prevent mine slipping - just need the cash! Lol

Also know someone who put their bed up, rode their horse, put him in stable, untacked him and the daft beggar got down and rolled on the concrete floor! He had a very sore back for several weeks.

Have to say I have never subscribed to the 'day bed' theory

We chuck our beds up cos they are turned out in the day so gives the stable floor chance to dry out and it doesn't smell quite so much.

Another thing that scares me is people who leave horses in stables with head collas on with a hanging loop for the lead rope. Ive seen horses lean over the door and get this loop attached to a bolt and try and pull back and get stuck, I once saw a horse do this and damage its neck quiet badly then hit its head on the top of the stable.
