Daretodream and Flash had a bit of a drama last night at the yard, while I was busy mucking out I heard a rather horrified scream from Daretodream and Hooves coming Flat out up the concrete, followed by sliding and a loud bang! Anyway-I will let herself fill you in later on..

My question is-Has anyone ever experienced a horse straining its groin muscles? I thought it would be a very hard place to strain unless the legs went in seperate directions?
If so, how long should it take to recover properly? I personally always thought (With humans anyway) that the best way to cure a muscle pain it to keep it warm and keep it moving?...x

Yes we has an older hunter who back in 2001 did the splits with his back legs on some ice. He was not good for a long time. i think it took a good 6 months for him to get back to work, Might have been long! But he did suffer some lymphangitis due to a few little cuts he got.

ur plan of action was to keep him well rugged and turn him out to recover to stop him seesing!

I take it the horse straining its groin muscles is the one that landed in a heap with a bang last night? It might be worth getting the chiro or physio to check said animal out just in case its done something else, my friends horse did the same thing and strained its sacroilliac joint.

Well yes but I was presuming (obviously incorrectly) that OP had had the vet out today as she had come up with a diagnosis of groin sprain. By the way is your name Maxine, Amy May you remind me of someone??? PM me if necessary.

Applecart-you presumed correctly!
Amy May- The vet was called immediatly and it was him who diagnosed the groin strain.

Hi for those that are interested

I let flash out in the yard to stretch his legs while mucked his stable out, Bootys_New_Mums gelding was out in a small paddock in the middle of the yard, her gelding got down to roll while flash looked on, then the other gelding (obviously feeling good after his roll) got up and had a run about, flash through that it would be great fun to run up along the fence beside him (on concrete)
anyway he was coming flat out and went 2 pull on the breaks but slid both back legs went one way and the front 2 went the other way, when he went 2 get up he couldn't (such a horrible site) when he eventually did get up he couldn't put his leg on the ground was was hobbling around

all i could think was OMG hes broke his leg, so obviously i was already distressed seeing him fall and seeing him not able to walk on it, i was crying my eyes out thinkin that was it he was going to have to be PTS,
immediately Bootys_New_Mum took a hold of him and hosed his leg down to stop swelling, i got 2 bute into him and we got the vet straight way.

While waiting on the on the vet i stood with him and he obviously knew i was upset because he kept nuzzling me (it was so cute)

Vet came and assessed him, he said he'd pulled his groin, thigh and arond his stifle, got a pain killer straight into the vein and bute for the next few days and complete box rest for the next while too.

Its so unfair, hes had more than his fair share of vets visits! bloody horses

Vet said "thats horses for you, they are sent to test you" lol

When the vet confirmed that nothing was broken i started to cry again (lol) because i was soooo relieved that he was going to be ok!

I wasn't being sarcastic - I just assumed the vet had been called and as it turned out my assumption was correct. The main thing is that the horse is all right.

My God Daretodream - by the sounds of it you stayed a lot calmer than i would of managed, crying or not! Really hope he improves quickly, it sounds really painful for him. Let us know what happens :-)

Scarey , definitley follow the vets advice , keep him still for a while to let things settle down and then you can start with the turn out to help him get moving again.
