Do you lose the same stirrup regardless of which rein you are on?
I would say, you are probably gripping up with that leg when you are cantering - leg is then drawn up - weight out of the stirrup and then you lose it, get someone to check if you are sitting to the left as this could be the reason you feel you need to grip more with your right leg.
Probably got your weight to the left too much and gripping with your right leg which then comes up a teeny bit. You may always sit a little to the left without realising it - I know I do!!! My instructor tells me sit deep, sit up, shoulders back, tits out, weight down in your heels, stay square in the saddle. Good luck!

Thinking about it you could well be right about the sitting too much to the left. My left stirrup always feels longer than my right but I've put that down to damaging my hip badly some years ago and it being 'looser' if that makes sense.
Funnily enough though I don't have a problem if we are having a flat out gallop. Just with the canter
Try this exercise. Transition to canter, 3 strides in saddle, 3 strides out (or 4 or 5) & repeat. This ought to help strengthen both legs, if you're gonna go straight to no stirrups, you'll end up going wobbly as you grip with your legs, then you're stuffed if the horse takes off with you as you dont have the stirrups. Once you're not losing your stirrups after say 8 strides, you could try with out stirrups.
