dont know if im doing the right thing here - and yes i may phone the vet to ask if necassary - but i thought id ask you clever bunnies on here first : My pony has artristis in front pastern - now has new type shoes to help and has now got to start getting slowly back into work - have done the walk stage and need to start getting her trotting again - but the ground has just hardened up again - the vet has said she must never be lunged again or ridden in small circles but that i will be able to do light schooling -
Question is - today i walked her out but wanted to do a bit of trot, everywhere is soooo hard so when i got back i went into our all weather school (rubber) and did some trotting on the outside track - did i do right??? the school is fairly deep and big and we have only just started trotting again - so do you think it will have been too hard on her, i only did a couple of circuits on both reins very slowly - should i continue in the school or only do straight lines out on a hack??? - thanks for your replies x x x

Does she seem ok?

I cant see you causing her any damage

Did she feel happy enough?

I would give you vet a ring as you are obviously worried about it - and then at least you have peace of mind!

I think trotting round on the track is light schooling so you should be fine. I think it would be preferable to trotting on hard ground or roads. Just my opinion - but I would have done the same as you.

yes she seemed ok - difficult to know whats best to do really - wait for the ground to soften (could be waiting till christmas at this rate) or just go for it carefully x

How big is your school? I would trot her in the school - you wont get much softer surface although I would make sure its always level and not too deep so she isnt ploughing through it!

thanks for the vote sikaran - we only started a couple of weeks ago so i have to take it very very slowly to avoid lameness again - i try to follow vets advise to the letter but sometimes you have to 'improvise' a bit - i just dont want to rush things x x

thats the worry browbrow - the school is big so im not too worried about the circle bit im more worried about the depth - its is fiarly hard slog - i ran round with a kid on a lead rope recently and it was hard going!!

yes but your horse is probably fitter than you!

Seriously I think I would have done the same - its much kinder on her legs than the hard ground

I'd stick to along the long side of the school for now and come back to walk for corners. That's what I was advised to do after my boy was lame due to inflammation of coffin joint.
It is a nightmare when the ground get's hard, isn't it?
I panic when my boy decides to exercise himself round the field that he's gonna come in lame again
