Bit query- slightly odd one!

i need a bit that will avoid the areas of the bars of the mouth that a straight bar would connect on.

Long, long story, but in short it is to go into a sec D driving/showing/endurance type pony! he has a tendancy of stressing out, running through bits at times and setting his neck.

We can not put anything in that sits on the bars in the same place as a straight bar bit- any other mouthpeice or cheeks fine- there are no restrictions in HDT which is his main sport, everything else is secondary.


A hackamore/bitless is OUT- this pony checks for a bit of any form before he does a runner... if there isnt one, he goes in hand so id assume the brat would do the same ridden!!

Vet has been out, hence investigating bits with different pressure points.

Any ideas?!

It still sits on the bars of the mouth though, sorry- he's had a ported for the past year.

also had mullens and straights. oh, and one odd shaped ergonomic one!

Have you tried him in a hackable? Although bitless they can be pretty strong.

Alternatively maybe a fulmer with keepers or a hanging cheek?

A hanging cheek? It might just lift up enough to not be a problem.

Hartwell mouthpiece used in combination with a scawbrig.

Two reins - one on the bit & one on the nose.

A Waterford? Very mobile in the mouth.

Thanks guys- s4s, what is a hartwell? I haven't met that one- but two reins is out for driving, it would be impossible to manage- though he is usually ridden in double reins, so for riding its an option.
