Sorry to irritate you all but need a bit for Sunday (THIS week!)

My Welsh cob has a mouth soft as butter always in a Neue Schule snaffle. Hes quite well schooled and trained but put him in a fun ride environment and he instantly wants to race everyone and lead on the contact using his neck as the advantage.

I honestly don't think its a 'schooling' issue as hes so well behaved usually, he just gets over excited in a fun ride environment.

I used a waterford gag previously which worked.. but have red how awful they are which has put me off.

Any ideas what I can use for fast work?

Thanks!

If he goes well in a NS snaffle, have you tried a NS universal? I find that gives a bit more leverage if you need it, but overall it's quite a nice bit

No, although i have tried a snaffle gag with a very similar mouth piece to the neue schule. He just leaned on it worse than ever.

My Cob X sounds quite similar. He schools, jumps and hacks alone in a NS lozenge snaffle with no issues. For faster group hacks and fun rides when he'd get strong, I initially tried the NS universal equivalent and he was really unsettled and the brakes were barely better. After trial and error, I've found that a kimblewick or mullen mouth pelham work well for him, he seems to respect the curb action and only requires a light contact, which was a revelation and better for us both :)
