Hello, if anyone has any suggestions for a rubbed mouth please can they let me know.
Been at Stockland Lovell today and my horse has really badly rubbed the corners of his mouth, I think he has a really sensitive mouth as it happens after most competitions. My hands aren't particularly rough and I don't catch him in the mouth so I don't think its that.
He's ridden in a full cheek loose ring snaffle.
Anybody got any wonder cream or bright idea??
Meant to be going to Nutwell on Sunday but i'm not sure we'll be able to go if it doesn't get better. I won't ride him this week with a bit to give it a chance to heal.
Any advice greatly appreciated!
Thanks

Perhaps try a fixed ring? or a happy mouth? or a bit that is half an inch wider? May also be worth getting a bitless bridle to allow it to heal in the meantime?

Vaseline in corners of mouth before you tack up - I also use sudocream (spelling?!) if a horse gets a sore mouth.

Good luck at Nutwell - very envious, it's a lovely event.

I used a Dr Cook bitless bridle on my horse after he injured his mouth and I am so impressed with it that I will not return to a bit! The steering and everything else is so much improved and I am much happier with the knowledge that there is no pressure on his mouth....... .Try it!!

bit wrapping! I used it on my mare, bit like soft foam wrapping, really cheap , can buy it from some online places-got mine from ride away- £2.99

I have a horse that had the same problem - now I put vaseline on the corners of his mouth before tacking up(it has become part of the tacking up routine) and he hasn't had a sore mouth for months now!!

Vaseline when tacking up and comfrey cream/ointment after riding and several times a day. You can get it from a health food shop.

Are the called bit rubbers/ bit guards or something like that if it is on his face! Or mine gets a cut mouth xc coz he is very strong, vaseline all along the area it is rubbing thickly, alternatively try an eggbutt snaffle as the rings cant turn - hope it all turns out ok

Thanks for your responses! It's a french link bit. I do normally put vaseline for crosscountry but maybe need to apply it before all phases. Will be applying it for the rest of the week to avoid it cracking, may also try sudocrem as have some of that lying around.
Think it might be worthwhile getting a bitless bridle as not fancying hacking out in a headcollar!! Will have a look into it..
Thanks again
