I have a 7 year old part bred arab pony, he has been in a eggbut snaffle since he was backed..the exact same one with absolutely no issues. A month or so it began to rub one side of his mouth, not right on the corner just above. I have tried everything, different bits, vaseline, sudocreme, wound cream and rubber bit guards. Hes had time off with no riding and it sort of gets better then comes straight back after one ride. Ive even tried riding on a loose rein and it still rubs. He isn't actually showing any signs of it hurting him but I can't keep riding him. Does anyone have any idea of what I can do or what type of bit I can try??

Thank you so much!

Is the bit large enough?
Have you checked the joint on the eggbutt to see if it is loose enough to pinch his skin?

You can get a bit fitting specialist to come and visit you and your horse - they will advise if they think a different shape/size/type would suit better. It will be well worth the money if it stops your horse hurting and reopening the sore every time he is ridden.

Are you sure that it is being caused by the bit?

I think I'd get the vet to have a look at it. It might be something else entirely.

Maybe post a photo of it on here if you can.

Have you checked the fit of the bridle. Obviously leather stretches over time so one side could have gotten longer so not holding the bit in place. Try a different bridle but a bitting person should be able to advise on the whole package as already suggested. Also he has seen the dentist lately.
