My 6 year old cob came with a single jointed pelham (no curb chain). Can anyone recommend a similar but less harsh bit for him? He is not ready for plain snaffle yet though I hope to get him there.. Any thoughts gratefully received :)

A jointed Pelham with no curb chain is not going to really be any different to a snaffle, it certainly is not harsh in the true sense, if he is going ok in it you should be able to change to a hanging cheek snaffle and hardly notice any difference, the chances are he will be more comfortable in a bit used correctly than the Pelham used incorrectly.
The curb chain is there to make the bit function properly, without it the bit will pivot in his mouth and be uncomfortable, not milder as it may first appear, he may prefer a double jointed bit either a French link or one with a lozenge.

His main problem is he doesn't seem to like to lead from the bridle, doesn't go forward easily and tries to chew the reins. He head shakes after an hour or so hacking but I think that is to do with his browband being on the small side - new, larger one arrived today :)
