Bit suggestions, fleshy over the bars?

Beryl is proving a tricky fit!

She has a pretty small mouth, standard amount of tongue but very fleshy just over her bars and we're getting a bit of pinching up towards where her molars are. She is 'going' best in the Informed Design liberty eggbutt but when the dentist was here there were two obvious pinch marks. So I have tried her in my Mylers (loose ring rubbed the corners of her mouth, though the D ring was ok but a bit too big), but she really doesn't seem to like them? Lots of mouth open arguing going on, shes lovely and settled in the ID bit... She also doesn't like my trust bit that I started her in, doesn't want to open her mouth to be bridled, did I mention she's a sassy wee thing that makes her feelings known!

So I need bar relief not tongue relief, any ideas of what to try?

Arabi was difficult to bit for years spent loads on fancy bits he just wouldn't accept any contact and was generally unhappy, then someone suggested a magic snaffle I had never heard of them and this person lent me one and he was immediately better and I at last could get some sort of contact and he was happy, I rode him in it for quite a few years then started trying others and eventually he was easy with bits.

I did try a happy mouth once and it made both corners of his mouth bleed apparently some horses can be sensitive to the stuff they are made of.

How old is she? I only ask as could her teeth still be coming through?

Interesting, I did wonder about the magic bit as a friend used it for her horse, but I wasn't sure if it was another that is aimed at tongue relief?

She'll be four in May, all her molars are through, just her front corner caps to go, she has been slow with her teeth according to the 'norm'.

I don't know how the magic bit works I'm pretty useless with how most bits work tbh.

Interesting about her teeth Arabi took ages for teeth to settle as well, maybe it's an Arab thing! I couldn't put anything in his mouth until they were done, so might be worth waiting a bit until everything is through and trying again.

It’s more her mouth conformation than her teeth, she had her wolf teeth out and the dentist is happy enough. She thought she was pulling the bit back and pinching herself but she’s quiet in her mouth when being ridden so we think it’s just the shape of her mouth.

My cob has fleshy bars and a thick tongue and he prefers a baucher cheek piece over any other type, I "think" it's because it's stable and slightly lifted in his mouth but I could be guessing at this. From what I've read mullen mouth type mouthpieces should work well for him but he hates these.

He is also one who is very clear what his opinion on things like bits and saddles are!

Would something like this help? My mares have finally settled with this one. It is curved so doesn't sit straight in the mouth which I find hasn't suited mine.
I use the same sort of mouth piece but mine is a hanging cheek on Arabi and he goes really well in it, mine wasn't expensive either and was from Ebay.

Thats actually a good point about stability Arabi prefers an eggbutt or something that is still in the mouth so definitely worth looking into.

I've been doing some reading about Baucher cheeks, although quite a lot of places are still saying the now out dated information that they do exert poll pressure the general consensus is that they lift in the mouth reducing the pressure on both the tongue and the bars. Hth

Just something else I thought of I find altering the height of the bit can make a difference some like the bit to sit lower.
I sat the D ring myler lower, so no pinching at the back but she just isn’t a fan… though I’m wondering whether to get one actually her size and try again 🤔.

Yeah no poll pressure from hanging cheeks/ bauchers, but that’s a shout for them keeping the bit stiller and off the bars!

Bezza says thanks for all the suggestions 💕.

I've not read all the posts but have you contacted Expert Bits? They are really helpful and can suggest types to try based on mouth conformation (or arrange a consultation depending on where you are)...we've recently tried a comfy barrel snaffle for ours and he seems to really like it. www.expertbits.co.uk

They are a bit like the mullen mouth style of bits x

Might be worth a try I think myler always say to go a bit bigger rather than snug I think 🤔

She looks very Arab like in the ridden picture what percentage is she how is she bred if you don't mind me being nosy? 😊

Hmm see the myler I tried is slightly too big so now I don’t know!

She’s half Arab, sire is Cwyrtai Marko (HT Malik Madheen/ Alyetta), dam is a Welsh part bred O Fon Melody (Thomas/ O Fon Champagne).

I’m rubbish at keeping up with breeding and good lines but the guy I bought her from has a good eye for a nice horse 😊.
