Master came round and asked if I was going to go out with hunt next season. I have never thought of hunting my horse as I don't know if I could control/stop him. I regularly compete dressage and showing, but that isn't in a crowd of horses galloping.

I did a Pleasure Ride earlier this year and didn't both going at the end - big mistake, I really thought I was going to loose control and have a bolting horse. I had to cross the reins over his neck to control him, not a happy state to be in. When he does gallop he tends to put his head down, so I am holding all his weight.

He doesn't sound very well schooled does he? For showing I ride in a Rugby pelham, which is OK, doesn't lean too much.

Any advice?

Your best bet would be to take him Autumn Hunting where the mounted fields are smaller and the action done at a slower pace. This would give you an idea of how he would behave once full hunting begins.

Also if you have the chance, take him on some fun rides with another horse or in a small group, to get him used to the idea of 'running' with other horses.

Bitting wise I hunted a very strong cob in a waterford gag - stopped him leaning and helped with braking.

I started hunting 5 seasons ago and am now a full blown addict - just bite the bullet and give it a go. You could also ask around at the meet if somone will 'nanny' you as us hunting folk tend to be a sympathetic and friendly bunch!!

Good luck and have fun!
