Bit tape - anyone used this to get horses to mouth up?

I am trying to encourage my boy to mouth up and loosen his jaw. Has anyone used bit tape or anything else to encourage salivation?

if so - what did you use?

I haven't used it for salivation but it is very good for getting horses to accept the bit more quietly if they are a bit gobby.

have you tried any bits made of softer metals?

I have just wrapped my horses bit in latex as she was having contact issues. Settled her right down and she has started to relax her jaw a lot more and is much softer, consequently salivating more. Worth a try.

An old guy I knew used to tie some tail hair around the bit of a youngster he was breaking if it wasn't salivating. Must have worked, his horses always had lovely mouths!
