Hello, I got a new horse in the last 6mths, when I got him I was told to use a egg butt snaffle, but I have found him to pull a lot when I ho out on a hack away from home. At home I have got him going without pulling like a train. It's taken me 5mths to get him to relax. Any suggestions on a better bit to pull him up. Thanks

I guess it depends on what type of pulling your boy is doing. Is it a constant lean on the bit type of pull, or a snatch? My previous horse Domino was the former, combined with the annoying jogon the way home. I found switching him to a Tom Thumb with lozenge, combined with more schooling to get him listening to my seat and riding him in circle hacks/schooling on a hack really effective.
When I took him on he was ridden on the bottom ring of a 3 bubble gag, single jointed and I felt this was too harsh on him.

Neue Schule universal is what we use - kind mouthpiece but extra poll pressure if required.

I use a universal with two reins. The top is similar to a snaffle. I tend to keep the bottom rein knotted on his neck so I only need to use it when he starts to pull. It’s given me confidence that I can stop him and he’s learning to respect my aids the first time of asking.

Instead of going for a stronger bit, why not try a loose ring snaffle. When mine was ridden he would bulldoze in an egg but but with a bit of work went lovely in a loose ring. And far happier than a stronger bit (which we tried a fair few)

I think we'd need more info on how he's pulling - bits act in different ways and need to counteract the horses action. Do you have an instructor that can advise after seeing the action?
