Bit worried about his fetlock

Was out hacking yesterday and Godders banged hs fetlock on a metal gate we had to step over and then he went lame, well unlevel really. Unfortunately we had no option but to walk the 40 minutes back, and he was okay walking but would not really put his foot down for a while after we stopped.

At frst I didn't really think he was lame from the knock because he has never gone lame from a knock before, but he often pulls the odd muscle in his back, or bum! So I thought maybe he pulled a muscle picking hs legs up.

Now though I do thnk his fetlock is swollen (his legs are thick and hairy so quite hard to tell) felt his back and quarters muscles all over, and they all feel fine. He looks fine in walk, even stepping right under, but trot is very lame indeed. It is his off hind.

What I am wondering is - does it sound like I am right that it is the fetlock and not muscular? If yes, will cold hosing and normal turnout be sufficient provided that he seems to improve, and any ideas how soon I should expect things to start to improve??

Hello, havemnt seen you on here for a while! How is things with you and your godders?!

On the subject, is he putting weight fully on it? If you cant see any swelling/feel any heat because of hair, is there any chance you could clip round it? Sounds like he has bruised his fetlock IMO, but difficult to tell if you cant find any heat/swelling....

Hi you!

Just looking at the pics of your Godfrey - he looks GORGEOUS! No I haven't been on the forum for yonks. Godfrey has had a horrible summer, long running virus that really laid him low and also a terrible reaction to some epsom salts literally burnt his chest off, but lots better now (though permanently scarred).

He is putting hs weight on it now in walk but not in trot, It does feel a bit warm but not very, and I'm pretty sure it is swollen at the front because I can get my hand round the other one much more easily...

Oh poor boy!? How did that come about? Are you just bringing him back into fitness then? What was the virus? Just a mystery thing...?

We've been playing down in Glos on an event yard, so we've both learnt alot! And just producing him to start eventing next year. He has grown up alot, and is just a cheeky little b****r now!

Just been doing some HT, SJ etc since back in prep.

I think by the sounds of things your boy has just wolloped his fetlock. I would just keep a close eye on it, and cold hose it lots. Would be inclined to keep him in until sounder on it.....

The virus came out when we changed yards and it lasted for a couple of months - at one point he had to get ventipulman injected into his veins because he was coughing up clouds of dust :0( He made a miraculous recovery though and we were going to start dressage again on Sat (typical!) Back to the drawing board!

PM me some more pics if you have them, the ones on the site are too small for me to see properly, but I see that all Godfreys jump at least a foot higher than the fence!!

If there's no heat then it's a toughy....give him a couple of days off and see what happens.

personally id get the vet to check it out.
My youngster came in with a slightly swollen leg and i wanst going to get the vet out thought id just hose it down and give iut a couple of days. Then i got my old horse in who was also lame

so i called the vet out, good job i did really cus it turned out the younster had a blow to his fetlock joint and it had made a dent in the bone after six weeks box reat he had to go toNewmarket for an op cus there were bone chippings floating around that had to be removed.
To think that i wasnt even going to call the vet out

well hes ok now and im not saying that its that bad with your horse but its not worth the risk get him checked out to be on the safe side hope fully it will be nothing
