This morning i rode my daughters pony out as she was riding another one, I ride her quite often probably 2+ times a week and more at the moment with no problem.

We had got about 500 yards down the road from our yard when she fell, it was all very quick and i am not sure what happened other than suddenly the road was a few feet from my face and i was heading towards it at a horrible angle! Somehow she managed to right herself and jump back up with me still on board.

She was fine immediately after no lameness etc so we continued on a short ploddy hack (she was maybe slightly less forward going than usual)

she is ok, a few scraps and scuff's which i cleaned up and creamed but it quite worried me- Had it been my daughter she would have hit the road face first and if a car had been coming......

I have wracked my brain and nothing happened- she didnt slip or spook. There was a jogger who came by at that second and the pony has had some eye damage and lost significant sight but this hasn't seemed to bother her the couple of weeks she has been in work since it happened???
Any idea's would be appreciated- Thanks

Wear a BP. Don't let daughter ride her if it stresses you/her too much. Keep riding and see what happens. I assume you've trotted pony up on soft and hard ground and not seen a problem.

Have a hot choccy and a hug hun.

I trotted her up on the yard tbh our fields are like concrete and quite rutted so no chance of trotting on soft, she seemed fine.

I will continue to ride her myself for a while but think if it happens again she will be retired. I dont want to take any chances with her and she has other health issues (she is fairly old) she only really gets ridden to give her an active old age and a purpose in life- Bless her she is a lovely pony and i dont want to push her too much but she does love her work!

My old pony used to miss a step occasionally - the farrier/hunt master/pony club XC builder/youngster backer/lovely chap! (my horsey fountain of knowledge) said it was because she was just daydreaming!

I really hope this is a freak occurance for you - i might be tempted to suggest it was - perhaps have a quick chat with the vet on the phone if you have a good one - i wouldnt know what it might be mind you!

bump!

Sorry to hear about your pony falling over. Ted my 19 yo tb fell completely on his side with me when we were trotting in the school several months ago, he started to trip and couldn't recover on a corner. He landed on his side, face in the sand and was on top of my leg. Thankfully we were on a rubber/sand surface so I hauled my leg out from under him. It was awful though, really shook me up, mainly as it made me think about retiring him. He was fine though. We had the vet out the following week and she said it may be worth considering retiring him if danilon didn't help with his tripping. He has always tripped since we had him as a 14 yo, only now he can't stabilise himself as well. We tried him on danilon which really helped. He only light hacks in the forest and we haven't set foot back in the school on vets recommendation.

The danilon has really helped him, he never trips now, although the vet did say that given his arthritis in both hocks and spine, that he will only get worse, and that there will come a point when he trip and we'll decide it's time to retire him for good. At the moment Ted is happy hacking out a couple of times a week in the forest, and likes to get out and about, although I've stopped riding him due to the flies, as they drive him mad, and if he's not enjoying it, I don't see the point in riding him.

It might getting the vet out to give your pony a once over. It gave me a peace of mind.

immediate thought - is she due the farrier at all? I know its a simple thing, but mine stumbled recently and I hadnt considered the fact he was due a visit and his toes were a little long:o Could also be the grass/weather causing subtle changes to her feet? Is she a native type? You've prob thought of all these... but just incase. Hope she is ok and it was a one off.

My old loan pony has tripped in the past and has also gone down. A few times she has landed on her knees, a few times she has gone completely down but has managed to get back up again, until ....... my daughter was hacking her, ( well a walk around the fields), on this occasion she went down and stayed down for a moment or two and struggled to get back up. I managed to drag my daughter off as she was going down but tbh think the poor pony and me were shocked and I wounder if this is why she did'nt get straight back up. She has a bit of arthritis in her back legs, but i think its time to retire her. The sad things is she loves nothing better than a ride out. She is only ridden about once a week now, so she more or less semi retired.

Hi, Thanks.

The farrier came only a week ago, however this was the first time she had been ridden since her shoes were done??
I'm not at all sure about her breeding- she's not at all chunky!

I have to speak to the vet today anyway as she is about to run out of medication for another issue so will mention it to him.

It may be nothing to do with this but a horse at our yard went flat down on its side with force on the road a few years ago but that was purely down to the state of the road as it was desperately needing re-tarmaced (sp?) - it was like an absolute ice rink. All 4 feet just went out sideways from underneath in a split second (I was riding behind) and they just slammed down onto the road. Horse and rider both OK. I was just thinking if you've had the warm weather with you that we've had the road surface may be oily - quite a few roads round here at the moment you can see the oil has melted in the heat on the surface of the tarmac. Hope you and your daughter's pony are OK.
