Um - there girly bits swell up and they drip blood. Not particularly pleasant. Lasts for about two weeks but they are still on heat for a further 2 weeks so you need to make sure she cant get out or that a dog cant get to her. A dog will seek her out but she will also try and seek him out.
As above... but I didn't think they were hot for that long.
Our girls (All 4 of them) usually get the podgy girly bits then start bleeding, usually for about 7-10 days, they are usually at the most likely to concieve between days 9-12 then by day 14 they're usually off!!
Gypsy our patterdale was mated last time (Beginning of feb) and she came on on the Tuesday, was mated for the first time the following friday (Day 10) then the last mating was the monday after (Day 13) by day 14 she was not having any of it when William got fruity with her!!
First 11 days of a season is just blood and mess but they arnt ready for mating, it is 11 days onwards that the blood pales of in colour and they are ready, my whippet was mated on day 12 but my gsd's arnt normally ready til day 16/17 so please dont think after 14 days if safe as they are all different
you wont miss her season there will be drops of blood left for you to see lol
Their girly bits swell up. Our pup has just had her first season and is 9 months old. She was also licking a lot "down there". when we looked the bits were swollen and you can see blood around the area. She cleans her self well. Watch out for hairy dogs the fur can get a bit messy.
All the above plus her behaviour may change... she may become clingy and more loving..or not want to be touched. She may be disobedient and wilful ..or just sulk, they are all different.
Males will pay her extra attention (making notes in their diary's!)
she may or may not get flirty before she is actually in heat.
It is better to be safe than sorry!!!
I have known bitches that conceived from day 4 of showing colour (blood) right up to day 28 !!!
Most are ready to mate between days 9 and 16 ... but not all!
Years ago it was always done to mate on the 12th day, but things have changed!
Remember ..just because your bitch doesn't escape from your garden/yard does not mean that a passing dog cant get in!!!!
Don't let her out unless you are right there with her... mis-matings can happen in seconds!
