I have a 3 year old cavalier king charles which I rehomed on Saturday, so she is very new in our house. My question is that she eats her own poo, is this normal? My poodle has never done this, ok yes he likes other dogs poo but never his own, any ideas????

It is quite common, if they eat their own you can try giving them garlic tablets or feeding thm pineapple or corgetes. If they eat other dogs poo it is harder. you can try teaching a leave command or even try setting a trap ie putting tabasco sauce on to a poo and letting them eat it. it can be a very difficult thing to stop once they get in to the habit.

Haven't yet seen her try and eat other dogs poo, just caught her eating her own this evening. I thought I saw her doing it this morning as well but thought i was imagining it, but it is now confirmed, yes she does eat her own poo! Yuk, will try the garlic tablets I think. Thanks

Its very common in different situations or when they're puppies - I've been told it's a survival technique learnt in the wild to remove all traces of themselves and where they've been to prevent predators from following their tracks, but there's many other reasons such as hunger, curiosity, learned behaviour from watching you pick it up, anxiety or stress. Its called coprophagia and you can pick up tablets for it to give them to stop them doing it, but the tabasco sauce is tried and tested by my uncles young GSD bitch ;)

she was not impressed! :p

I don't know what it is connected to in her case as she was rehomed. I do know she was living in an apartment with no garden and spent the day on her own. She was not walked and was seen to be a depressive dog. When we took her on Saturday we were told she hated to go outside and would only be carried, was depressed and over ate. I feed her twice a day, and one dentastix teeth thing in the evening. I have never seen a happier dog in the garden, her whole body moves in excitement with her tail. She loves coming on walks with me and my poodle and is just a joy. So seems very content now, but could it be possible linked to being depressed alone all day? Maybe she would go to the toilet in the apartment and get in trouble? Hopefully I can change this habit of hers!!

My bitch went through a phase of this. The vet said that it was her diet as the food we were giving her was not being properly digested so when she pooped it was a case of 'Oh yum, more dinner...and it's HOT. Yay!!!!' LOL. I changed her diet and she stopped instantly.

Tiffy was a cow for this when she was younger I was advised to add pineapple either fresh or tinned (in juice not syrup) to her meals which I did and she stopped within 36 hours and has never done it again, I only used pineapple for about a week, I have also used on rescue dogs and yup it works every time :D
