Does anyone know why our 2.2 year old beagle bitch would be humping a duvet cover? She doesn't do it to peoples legs or at any other time on any other object, but if the duvet is piled on the bed and she straddles it for any reason i.e. to jump across it, she starts humping it. She also humps it if you move it from under her. She doesn't display any other masculine behaviour i.e doesn't cock her leg to urinate or anything.

She is a rescue who has been in kennels at the start of her life, was then adopted by a couple with kids but returned to the kennels as they couldn't cope with her (kids teasing her dangling food and she was jumping up and nipping at them). She's come from Beagle Welfare.

Other than this she's settled in lovely, we've had her since about mid June. She's a lovely obedient dog, who is very loving, relaxed and carefree. She still displays a lot of puppy behaviour which isn't suprising given her age, and she loves to play, run around like a mad thing and chew.
The only other behaviour she displays which is out something we've not experience before with our previous beagles is burying any toy item we buy her. She immediately runs into the garden and hides it. SHe isn't territorial, she lets you take food from her and toys, and isn't possessive at all.

I know a lot of dog behaviour comes from watching other dogs, which she may have done whilst in kennels. But she is a single dog in the household, so she hasn't been watching any dogs whilst we have had her. It doesn't really bother us, but I am just curious I guess.
Any ideas?

Hi

Has she been neutered?

Yes she had her first season and then was spayed, I'm assuming it was around the six month to a year stage as is the norm. I am not sure if she is doing in as some form of play. We've only seen her do this about a handful of times, but having had a bitch of my own for twelve years (who went on to develop male behaviour as she was on a hormone tablet due to slight incontinence following spaying) it makes me curious.

One of my (spayed) JRT bitches did this - but to a fluffy fox. Poor foxy :)

She was the most unassertive, least dominant dog you've ever met. Quite nervy too and I don't know if the fact she was more than a sandwich short of a picnic had any bearing on it. Never, ever did it to another dog or person and only once tried to hump the cat! That didn't go well..

We used to say that it was the only thing that she could dominate. After a session, she'd strut her stuff for a little while than revert quickly back to the sweet, gormless lump that she was. Other than that, I've really no idea, sorry.

Our spayed JRT humps our sofa cushions, she also chews them. I have to replace them every 6 months! We try to keep her out of the lounge now although she won't do it if we are in the house.

I think you will have to train her not to. It might be worth checking next time she goes top the vet for her jabs that there is no hormonal imbalance but I see no reason why you can't just teach her not to do it.
Friends 6 month old pup tried to hump the stable feral the other day. I doubt he will try that one again!!

Daisy humps, only me though. She's very unassertive, also, and oh thinks it's her way of asserting herself.

We call her Miss Shagaloof.
