Puppy hunting again and wondering if there is a difference between the two temprament wise, obviously either is to be spayed/neutered, but what are the differences in owning either? Is there a difference once they've been 'done' or do they just sort of become 'geldings'? (Sorry I can't think of a way to describe it!)

Secondly how much on average does spaying/neurtering cost? A couple of hundred quid? When do they need this done?

Thank you and sorry for some VERY numpty questions, I am safe to own animals honest! :D

Neutering depends on size of dog and the area you are in but it shouldn't cost a couple of hundred quid, ideally!

We always had bitches up until about five years ago and I am a complete convert to dogs.
You will get people telling you that neutered dogs get fat and lazy but my neutered male is incredibly lean, you tailor feeding and exercise accordingly. It may also have an impact on the coat, depending on the breed.
He certainly calmed down a lot which was good.
My younger male is entire and does not mark in the house or hump anything :p

Again you will get various opinions on when to neuter, with large, slow maturing breeds I would wait until physical maturity.

What breed/type were you thinking?

Diesel my male Dobermann was neutered at 18months for £160 which also included blood test for VWD he was also microchipped and his nails clipped so I thought I had a bargain. When I rang round for quotes the highest was £200 and was for neutering nothing else. If you ring any vet the prices are quoted according to weight and as he was 37kg was always going to be pricey.

All of my neutered dogs and spayed bitch have not put on weight since their procedures. Diesel is now 40kg but took a while to mature and is still very lean.

My 5 month old was neutered Friday & it cost £120 plus extra £20 had her chipped at the same time :o) Always had dogs until Pippa but I'd always have bitches from now on, Pip is so much more loving & willing

To have our lab neutered at 14 months cost about £125.

I think both dogs and bitches (neutered) are great. I have one of each, and would never choose one over the other. Before they're neutered male dogs can wander off, and bitches can be greedy, but not a big deal. Both of ours (and previous dogs and bitches we have had over the years) are equally loving. I think the bitches have been slightly cleverer, but that may have just been coincidence?

Adult weight of a BT about 7kg so it shouldn't be too expensive then?

Fingers crossed I might have found a puppy, have emailed for some pictures of a litter just down the road, ready on the 10th March. Very exciting!

We've had dogs and bitches (samoyeds and now malamutes) for years - both entire and not.

The bitches, even when done (watch the weight if speyed), have all been sneaky, loving and have a great sense of humour! They know just how to work you :D

The dogs, again whether entire or not, are more aloof, but honest, not so clingy, and more open.

Love both sexes for different reason.

These are just my opinions - every breed is different

Hopefully going to see the pups tonight, so far OH and I have only come up with dog names so if there’s not a huge difference when done we’ll probably go for a dog, mind you it depends which one I fall in love with...
