My Poppy is 9mths old and has started her 1st season this weekend, she is bleeding and I know to keep her away from any male dogs for 3 weeks.

I`m looking for any advise on seasons, will she bleed for the whole time, how will I know when she`s finished etc etc??

My labrador bitch had her 1st season at a year old a few months ago and I was all new to this too. They bleed for about 2 weeks, then it dies down but we kept ours away from the boys for 4 wks as I tried her after 3 wks and a dog tried to jump on and she was going to let him aswell. Its a right pain, I have another bitch but shes been spayed and its so much easier, I want the labrador spayed but my OH won't have it. It is difficult as we keep our pony on the family farm where our dogs mum, dad & brother live, so we cant take her up with us because of her dad and brother. Oh they get very swollen down below and when they are at their biggest, that is when they are prime, vulgar isn't it!

..it's important to know that it's AFTER she stops bleeding and the discharge turns clear that she is at her most 'dangerous' ...some folk thing that once the blood has stopped or eased off then the season is at an end but the opposite is true

. Ovulation usually happens between days 10-14 of a season but there are really wide variations - I've known a bitch get caught from day 3 and as late as day 20 so you must be vigilant right the way through.

A first season may be a bit different to her subsequent ones and she may be a bit cranky too ...don't forget that once she is at her most receptive she will do ANYTHING to try and get herself mated ...it's not just male dogs that become sex mad duruing this time

so make sure she cannot get out by herself and keep her on a lead at all times throughout her season.
