hello to everyone out there!

i got a horse from sales the other day, and the thing is he bites, no nipping or nibbling, its biteing!

trainer did warn me but just wonder how you would deal with it, he went for me tonight and i told him off which made him mad, i had hold of headcollar and he was pushing against me trying to get a bite!lol wondered about a water pistol!lol or would you just muzzle him? hoping he will improve with regular turnout and one to one but id like to keep my limbs intact in the meantime!

Well, this sounds extreme but I've seen it work. Whenever you are handling him keep a metal curry comb in the hand that is closest to him. Everytime he goes to bite you manouvre the hand so that instead he actually makes contact with the comb. You have to react swiftly, be totally calm and collected, and YOU DON'T PUSH THE COMB INTO HIM. He pushes himself into the comb when he goes to bite you. There was a stallion who was really quite aggressive, and he'd taken chunks out of a guy's arm, and this technique was used consistently over a couple of weeks and it did work.

Be careful with putting on a muzzle, that you dont antagonise him, he may react with another violent outburst other than biting just to get his point across, if he reacted badly to being told off.
I was always told that mares kick and colts and geldings bite and rear, having had a colt that was a NASTY biter, he also used to lash out with his front legs at my face when he was mad. Maybe try to establish what hes trying to achieve by biting, if hes just a rude bu**er! be firm but fair with him.
Good luck whatever you do.
