bites from horse flies

i usually get the odd one or two bites ( must have tasty skin) but this weekend i have been bitten so bad all over my waistline, and from my knees down to my toes. i have been up all night in agony with wet towels over my legs. my GP has told me to get antihistamine tablets and calamine lotion. thats ok this time but is there any preventative i can take. this is a new yard to me been there since dec 07 and i can not spend the whole summer in a bee keepers outfit.

i will try and get some today, as much as i love going to the yard every day, i can not go through this every time. im not sure if they are infected as i have swollen glands as well. my GP was not very helpful when i rang she said they were busy after the bank holdiay
 
It does work - I used 100% deet when I went on a jungle trip to Borneo and I didn't get bitten until I forgot to put it on one day (oops!)

You've reminded me I should get some for myself, as I got eaten alive yesterday as well! Nasty midges

have just gone outside office and turned hosepipe on and let it run all over legs, relief for 10 mins

You poor thing, I got bitten twice last year both while I was wearing black joddies! My legs swelled up to double their size

I got some cream from the chemist but I was in pain for about a week.
 
Poor you. If its horseflies keep your eyes on them as they can be nasty. I hate them and almost always end up on antibiotics if Im bitten as they end up big hard pus filled lumps. I use hydrocortisone cream if Im bitten at first and if the redness arround the bite starts to trail a lot then I have to get the antibiotics. Not trying to worry you but you can get celluitus or even blood poisonning from them.
 
i have legs plastered in calamine lotion and grabbed a few hours sleep. have taken piriton. so hopefully it will settle soon. i counted over 30 bites. my ankles have swollen . but............i managed to get jungle bens 95% deet safari strength fly spray so hopefully it wont happen again
