New Horse came with more issues than I bargained for,.. mainly on the ground, initially he was actually very scary in the stable, and had to be restrained to be able to groom, tack etc, now.. 8 weeks on and some ground rules and tlc, he doesnt need restrained, but, he still nips, and is very quick at it too, he was orphaned and is been suggested not having a mother to discipline him, and his previous home he had no one to one, (he is 9),.. I'm open to suggestions, tried and tested or common sense!!

Is he turned out with anyone where you are? Sounds like he needs an older role model to boss him about a bit and put him in his place!! When you are working with him, when he stands quietly, praise him (so he gets to know your 'good' voice, I also do this when handing over tea if I have a new horse that's getting to know me). If he nips then a sharp no, while standing up to him. If he does it again then I would say a sharp no again and get him to walk back out of your space - if he can't treat you appropriatly then he doesn't get to share your space. A poke in the shoulder groove and a firm 'back' should do it. In the mean time I would hold off treats so that he knows that his mouth and you should never come into contact!

Thanks, that makes sense, he lives pretty harmoniousley with my 3 donkeys, the old Jenny is definatley the Higher Arche,.. I am delighted how he has become more trusting and respectful in a short time, but will continue the firm but fair approach.

He's probably just trying his luck with you! If he thinks he can get away with anything then he'd be silly not to give it a go! I'm sure he will improve loads in time, he must have realised you're not going to be a walk over if he is improving already, he'll get there!
