Well decided to give ponio a bath today only to find that cassey was covered in lice, so quick scrub and bit of combing with a nit comb to get the dead ones out, so heres me panicking never had a horse with lice so near heart-attack once rinsed a very long walk to Equimix who advised demoraline or something :L and some louse powder. Does anyone knw the life cycle of a biting lice as in how old do they have to be to lay eggs and how long it takes to hatch, recommended apparently to put louse powder on every other day and bath once to get rid of alive ones then bath 3 days later to kill any eggs that have hatched and then another 3 days later to get rid of any lonesome eggs that survived. What do you guys think?

Never heard of demoraline? Personally i have found Coopers to be the best thing for getting rid of lice. Apply then repeat 2 weeks later to kill any that have hatched since the first application.

I've just discovered my new 4 year old has lice today.

I have applied Coopers Spot On fly treatment for cattle, as this also covers lice, and can be used on horses.

It didn't take long to do all five of my horses (just in case) with minimal faffing. I will re-treat them all in 14 days.

I can already sees oodles of dead lice in Tilly's coat at the application site.

You're talking about Dermoline Shampoo. I love it, smells like bubblegum.

oh thankgod least im not the only one! when i was explaining it to shops on what to treat it with they were like ooh i dnt know what they are! and me panicking thinking oh my god has she got some rare disease and okay by the sounds of it 14 days sounds about the right time then and jeez she has soooooooo many its horrible :(

Out of interest what do the bites look like?

What is going on this year, at least half of the horses in my boys field have them, touch wood, so far he has not.

I would have thought that the cold winter would have killed them off, or have the little bleeders reared their ugly heads because heavy rugs have been kept on for soo much longer?

Answers on a postcard :)
