Met one of the.other liveries mum today whilst shopping. Said i hadn't seen X for.a.while, bit probably just missing her. The answer "she's not up much during the week, its getting too cold to be out in now"! I'm on diy, and horses all live out!
if she's cold now, a) how will she.manage in the depths of winter, and b) how does she think the poor blooming horse feels!
i couldn't think of a thing to say, just muttered that i was digging out my thermals and left her to her shopping!
ets, she's not a child btw, grown woman!

Oh god, people like this wind me up!! I don't know why they bother having horses and living in GB!

Maybe I'm interpreting this wrong, but to me "she's not up much during the week, it's getting too cold to be out in now" = she is not up much during Monday to Friday, but she still goes to the yard during the weekend. If my interpretation is correct, is it warmer in the weekends? Or is it perhaps more a matter about that it is more fun, she has the time to spare, on the weekends?

Anyhow, I know that there is persons who feels the cold, even when wearing both layer on layer and thermals, but if you own a horse, you need to look after him/her all the year around, or have your horse on full livery.

SC, horse is on diy. Rugged, with one of my old rugs that i 'lent' her. Shares a field with another horse, whose owner can only 'manage' every other day! It gets a.hard feed when she sees it, maybe twice a week, and hay I'm guessing when the.other.owner puts some in. To give you an idea of the grazing, my girl is now fed twice a.day, and has a.round bale to share with her wee al. I'm on my 3rd big bale this year so far!

lol, its positively tropical.at the.weekends!

smokey, if the horse is going to suffer I think you should speak to the girl concerned and, if she won't listen, voice your concerns to the yard owner. I don't like to think of a horse suffering through a bad winter with unchanged rugs and not enough to eat :(

Its not a good start, is it? I'm shocked at people on DIY who don't come up at least once a day and assume their horse will be all right. I recently noticed one of the horses that had been put into my two's field had been kicked badly. I moved my two into another field and wondered how to contact the owner. So did the YO. The next day the owner came up, 36 hours later, and said it was ok. Owner is a vet...

that's awful! I haven't been up to mine for two days, but i know she's ok because her fieldmates owner has checked and fed her for me, and texted an update both days.

When I read the last sentence, my first thought was that I'm not sure that I would want to take my dogs or cats to that veterinarian.

Some people don't deserve horses. All up for riding but not the looking after. If you like an indoor, warm hobby then take up tiddlywinks instead - leave the horses to people that want to care for them properly! Rant over. Oh and well done for biting your tongue :)

i can't believe 'it's getting too cold' is an excuse! i see my horses even more in the cold as they start coming in, rugs needs checking, more feed... but i'm guessing this lady also finds it's too hot in the summer to do her horse regularly and too wet in spring and autumn :P

that's just about the measure of her actually! Or she's not well, or there's been a disaster at home, or she's going to the dentist.

In the summer, there'd be a couple of days where I didn't go and see my lad. He's on part livery anyway so YO would have checked. It felt very weird not seeing him, I couldn't relax! In winter, it's every day unless I can't get there, no excuses. I like it anyway; fully trained up prior to purchase by dog walking for 45 minutes at night, whatever the weather. I don't mind the cold; you can always put on a coat and hat! and if you can't cope with the weather outdoors in winter you probably shouldn't have a horse and should take up a fully indoor hobby!

Hope this girl's horse will be OK.

Until the last couple of years, I'd never encountered owners who didn't check their horses at least once a day, but now I see it all the time. I just don't understand why YO's allow irresponsible liveries to stay.

I also encountered a vet who left her TB out all winter (no hay in fields) and came down for 5 minutes every few weeks. The poor horse's rug was more holes than material and we had to swop it one stormy night for its only other rug which needed holding together with baling twine. The vet was a friend of the YO.

I can imagine I'd have bitten my tongue too, it amazes me how lightly people take responsibility, and worse, they're the type who get away with it!

I think most DIY yards I know about have a loose "policy" about how often horses need to be checked, but its very hard to actually monitor it, people could be coming up at any time. We had a person who said they came every morning at 530 am and rode/saw to their horse, all the evidence suggested otherwise, but maybe she did, who knows? There's a similar long standing situation at the yard with an owner who has a number of horses, you never really know if what they're telling you is quite accurate, unless they don't need any sleep! In some ways it is easier if someone just says "I am not coming to the yard because of x can you keep an eye on my horse"

What makes me even madder is when people don't tend their horses regularly but lie or make excuses. They KNOW they are doing wrong by their horses and are ashamed of that but it doesn't actually make them fix the problem!
