bitless bridle

Hi Im hoping someone could give me some advice. Ive recently began riding again after a fairly long period away, Ive took a horse on loan, who has been out of work for almost 2 years, hes a little old aslo (hes 18).
He has a bitless bridle, which I have never riden this way before. and he seems really eager and is cantering off when Im not asking him to, I know I am going to have to go back to basics. Im going to be riding 3 times a week, so what sort of things should I be doing? I dont seem to have very good control with the bitless bridle ie; getting him to stop. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!!
 
He may have to be bitless because of a dental problem. There are quite a few different types , mine wasn't keen on the pressure round her nose and i fould it didn't release quickly enough. she was actually better when I just attached the reins to her noseband.
I would speak to the owner and found out the reason why.
 
Its the crossover/crossunder bitless bridle. His owner said he has always been quite sensitive with a bit, and then with him been out of work for over 2 years when she tried his bridle with a bit it gave him a sore mouth.
As Ive never riden this way before, I think this is why Im having problems, Ill have to get practising I think
 
That is what I tried on Brooke when she was waiting to get a loose tooth out. Make sure it's the one like the dr cook one where the rings slide down leather. The one I tried the rings slid down rope, but i found it never went to the loosest position so the noseband part was always a bit tight. She wasn't comfortable with that as her noseband is always quite loose. It is meant to be pressure and release but I found it didn't release either quick enough or to be loose enough. Does that make sense lol.
 
yeah I know what you mean about the dr cook one I looked it up on the net. Ive riden today think I may be getting the hang of it, trying to be light with my hands, not so easy when Ive not been riding for some time lol, oh well practice makes perfect!!
