I'm thinking of switching to a bitless bridle, any pro's and cons? how difficult is it to switch? are they gaining popularity and if so with what type of rider / horse?

there are quite a few sites that will tell you about the different types along with the pros and cons of each .... and those will depnd on what suits your horse really and you wont know till you try different kinds if possible.

sheila at the above link will refund on her products if returned within 30 days so you would only "loose" postage so you could view it as a hire charge if you like ;)

Taz has had a dr cooks for 12 years and we have done all sorts in it .... my daughter sj Taz in it, I did endurance , the grandchildren as well as some disabled riders all ride her in it too......and we also drive in it. Taz will also go in a rope halter so we could use one on the rope bridles now avaibile if we need to replace the dr cooks ever :D

you could have a look here too ..... you can hire several ;)

as to how easy / hard to switch.... well some horses just take to it like a duck to water but some might need a period of adjustment to get used to the different feel.

If you get one that suits you both no reason you cant do anything you want really .... and things like steering can be just as accurate .... if we can drive through cones with only inches to spare either side then little else needs that accuracy :D :D :D :D ( well getting though narrow gates out hacking is another good test and a requirement really of steering

only thing that stops you doing anything is if you want to compete in anything that the FEI governs

I ride in a dr cook bitless. My boy loves it and I prefer it for endurance rides and general hacking BUT my boy is no good xc or SJ in it sadly! he gets far too excited and completely ignores it. He has also took the mickey on endurance rides and tanked off :D

Saying that, I do think it depends on your horse and worth trying :) I like to use mine for endurance as he goes forward much better in it.

I use a dr cooks for my horse that spins out hacking. I can on the whole stop the spinning and at least know that his mouth is intact! I have had great control, but as he is getting fitter the brakes in canter are lessening. I use a bit for schooling and jumping. Been a god send for this horse, however tried it on my other horse and she hated it, so doesn't suit all.
