Hello All
I am after some advice on introducing my horse to a bitless bridle, he's a 12yr old I.D & unfortunately has melanomas around his ears & cheeks.Last year i found one on the inside of his upper lip (confirmed by vet) & today found one on his lower lip. They are realy hard & feel like he has a thick lip,I am concerned that they are getting close to the corner of his mouth where the bit sits & this may make it uncomfortable for him.As I have never ridden a horse in a bitless I just wondered if some of you very knowledgable people on here have any advice. He is currently ridden in a frenchlink snaffle. Thanks in advance.

Oh I'm sorry to hear that. The bitless bridle should be a good alternative though. What type are you going to use? I have used the Dr Cook's on two horses - one a TB and the other an arab. On both horses I basically just fitted the bridle and more or less got on with it with no problems whatsoever. You could try walking the horse in hand for a while, and simulating use of the reins as when ridden, just to get the horse used to the feel of it for turning, stopping etc. There is lots of information and a huge amount of testimonials on the Bitless Bridle websites - one in uk and the original us site: www.bitlessbridle.com www.bitlessbridle.co.uk
