Have been riding my horse in a happy mouth pelham for over a year, as i had no brakes when he took off. even in a pelham he could be hard to stop, but it worked eventually.

Anyway going so well now whith schooling etc, have been looking for a less strong bit. A happy mouth is better and a hanging cheek was suggested. Anyway, sods law took him out today in pelham before going to saddlery to buy hanging cheek and he took off after being spooked. Again very hard to pull up in the pelham.

Have brought the happy mouth hanging cheek, but after todays episode am nervous about using it in case i have no brakes in that situation.

therefore, what do you think?

hanging cheek - Yes/No
Remain in pelham?
or can anyone suggest another solution?

All ideas greatfully received as I would like to think that 1 day i could get wiz in something more gentle.

Well a bit is only strong as the hands using it! So if you feel it is necessary its doesnt matter whether it seems too strong, if your horse goes best in it stick with it

no, haven't used 2 reins to date, but this is really good idea. hanging snaffle when all ok and pelham when not!! could also help me explore safely the ability to use hanging cheek in future. Thanks

have you thought about maybe having something with a joint in as this could give your horse something a little more to think about.
