Hello everybody.can i please pick your brains please!.My boy has always been ridden in either a eggbutt snaffle or a hanging cheek snaffle but as he is getting alot fitter and feeling good about life he is quite keen to go up a gear in canter. We are hunting new years day and was wondering if there is a slightly stronger bit that you can recommend. He has a good soft mouth and i would like to have a few more brakes if i need them but still stay with a mild bit!!.And my next issue is that he is very mouthy on his bit (i know that is a good thing) but would puting him in a flash noseband calm his mouthing down or am i being too over the top?.I'm not one for gadgets and gizmos so not quite sure what is the best path to take if any!!.

My girl is in a hanging cheek, and for more brakes a pelham with two reins, by just using the top rein it has a very similar action and you can use the curb rein for more brakes as and when they are needed.

She hunts quite happily in that.

Yep agree with FinnMcCoul, waterford snaffle, Pelham would be quite a bit down the line for me, as you say he sounds to have a lovely soft mouth, and its more for your peace of mind.

Ahh didnt realise he had already hunted and been good in a snaffle!!

Yes a waterford snaffle is good brakes, possibly with a flash or drop if you feel he is opening his mouth as an evasion rather than just mouthing the bit

Yes, mild in the form of snaffle cheeks I believe, I like the action as it is slightly stronger than a snaffle, but with the advantage of there being little to grab at and lean on.
