Hi the Shetland x welsh pony my son is riding is very strong, as I know they typically are. He understands well leg aids etc but getting him to halt and stand is awful. Currently in basic eggbutt snaffle but needs something stronger- any recommendations? Was thinking a Pelham ?

Before you do that, ask the EDT to rasp the teeth, and comment on the mouth conformation.
Do some more ground work, riding or non riding, to make sure he understands the verbal commands, and that when he is "working" he has to do what he is told to do. just because he is small does not mean he can "opt out"
An eggbut bit is often only suited to a kind type of pony.

I have just bought a 4 inch single jointed pelham for my welsh section A so tiny the bit they have another pelham on ebay 3 1/2 inches

Or I suggest a Kimblewick the one with the two extra choices of rein position

Pelhams are great for those built like a brick ****outhouse midgets!:D

thanks for the advice, seems the Wilkie looks like a suitable option. The pony of pure muscle, I don't think I've ever seen a pony bum with no fat but solid muscle. His riding instructor said today that he is stronger when he sets his head than anything she has ridden recently. He's had his teeth done recently and is great on the lunge for voice commands. He's a real little all rounder, its just when he is off the rein, trot to walk to fine but walk to stand is a nightmare!
