Hi, have 2 rescue ponies (dartmoors) that are rising 3 and am thinking of starting to train them in the spring/summer. Just biting and lung/long reining etc for now but haven't broken anything in for about 10 years, and never anything so small! Just wondering what bit you would recomend for biting? Is there anything new on the market? One pony is v v sharp and the other is more nervious but also v bad with his mouth. I have no idea what has happened to him in the past but he would never let you touch anywhere near his mouth. He lets you touch it know but had dentist out last year and he panicked, reared up and cut his gum on the clamp so am thinking he's not going to take v kindly to something being in there!!! Any ideas?

i would start with rubber straight bars or happy mouth bits. Biggest thing will be making sure they are fitted correctly and lie comfortably.
Sounds like fun though!

I would suggest a straight bar nylon snaffle - wouldn't recommend rubber bits - ever!

Started my welsh x TB in a loose ring straight bar happy mouth, and he's still in it, eighteen months later. He's perfectly happy, accepts the bit, and has a nice 'foamy' mouth. Actually he's in his second one, since he managed to chew a bit of a groove in the first one, but that was solved after a visit from the dentist.
