He's very onward bound - thinks very forward and is super bold. He's also a know all and thinks he knows exactly what he's doing - which he does most of the time. Currently in a grackle with a cheltenham gag - shakes his head a lot to evade being told to slow down and needs a massive yank to bring him back before combinations. He's 14, never had a cross country fault, would ideally like something less strong but with control - not sure such a thing exists. He pulls like a train, he's 17hh so rather big. Thanks!

Have you tried any of the combination bits? Or a milder bit and a kineton? (I have no idea if that's BE legal)
This is far from my area of expertise but throwing a suggestion in while more knowledgeable peeps come to the party!

I had a sensitive but very strong TB mare who could freak herself out xc. Best control and happy horse was a myler combination, so much happier and we could properly build her confidence.

My horse is strong but has a sensitive mouth so I've had great success with the bomber universal bits - I've the happy tongue which a straight bar and stops him hanging on one rein but I've also got the Bomber buster roller universal which he goes super him too - they both come with a curb strap which I do recommend using, keeps the bit from over rotating or over leveraging and gives a nice feel when you check them and get them to come back to you!
