Bits for young horses (esp cobs / natives)

Just interested in people' opinions really.

What sort of bit did you start you horse off in for long reining / riding? Also those with cobby / native types (esp fell ponies

) do you find slightly thinner bits better or can you get away with a thicker bit. Currently have a loose ring snaffle that is quite fat and thick and am slightly concerned it is a very full mouthful for pony. Also if a horse naturally has a higher head carrige would the way a normal snaffle mouthpiece acts in the mouth be detrimental, would having a losange or french link in the middle be better?

Sorry, don't know too much about bitting!!
 
Fairly narrow happy mouth rotating lozenge type snaffle here, and he gets on really well with it (despite his massive tongue!) Have heard really good things about hippus bits too, if the action of the snaffle proves unsuitable for yours

My Sec D goes in a KK Sprenger Ultra with the lozenge mouthpiece - the width is 'average' and he is really happy in it - he doesn't have the biggest mouth either and this really suits him
 
I've got a young Dales and he's in a loose ring starter bit with lozenge, the thicker one. Tried changing to a thinner Neue Schule one but changed back as he goes better in the thicker one.
 
i started harvey in a full cheek snaffle (helped with steering)

then he had a french link which he leaned on
so i swapped that for a egg but he didnt like that
tried a sweet iron french link - he leaned on that

then tried him in a hanging cheek and ive not looked back since

hanging cheek is the name - they come with different links or joints though

harvey has a single joint
my friends tb has a hanging cheek french link

and HC's are snaffles
