I am now going to try a new bit for my horse to see if I can make him a little more comfortable. He came to me with a flash on but more recently I have tried him with/without it. He seems more settled with it on in that he pulls less and doesn't throw his head around as much. He is currently in a fulmer with copper rollers. He isn't particularly strong but I do find a plain snaffle with no flash he takes a little while to come back to me and I am not 100% confident if he wanted to go I could stop. I have tried him in a gag with no flash, gag with flash, loose ring snaffle with lozenge and have now come full circle back to the fulmer. I really want to do more schooling with him but he is quite clearly unhappy in his mouth so we always end up fighting. He is due a dentist check which I will arrange in the next few weeks but he has been like this mostly since I got him I am just wanting to do a little more with him now.

Any ideas of what I should try next....? I was thinking something a little stronger than the snaffle but still with the lozenge and perhaps play around with the bit material. I keep looking at bits then get a bit confused and don't actually do anything about it.

I too am clueless about bits! But my instructor recommended me this http://www.ejeffries.co.uk/product/479547/BI671/_/Precision_Bit for my strong Haffie who constantly grabs hold or opens his mouth.

He has been like a different pony with this bit it, no longer needing the flash strap. So light, responsive and happy.

I'm sure others will be along to advise you better, but this worked for us when a snaffle wasn't enough but a gag too much.

It's funny you have posted that. I went to an event the other day to see my old horse and she was telling me how they had started using the neue sheule (sp?) universal bit which she raved about and looked around and noticed at least half the competitors seemed to be using one so decided it must be some kind of wonder bit. But was a bit reluctant to buy as its so expensive if it didnt work I didn't want to end up massively out of pocket so this seems to be very similar but much cheaper. Think ill give it a go!! Thank you!!

I get so confused with bits I know what I want but there are just so many different variations I never know where to start!

Try calling the bit bank, I've used them before and they have a great wealth of knowledge regarding what bits are suitable for your horse and his way of going. You can also hire a bit for 30 days, which is a great help if you need to send it back because your hose doens't like it! I've used them quite a few times now.

I find a cherry roller very useful. I use it for everything, including when we've been out mock hunting and XC, he doesn't get strong in it, but in a snaffle he's a so and so and a gag or a pelham is just an excuse to grap the bit and tank off as it's too much!
