Hello, I have a mare who is insanely sensitive to everything and only goes well when everything is perfect. She came with lots of issues that are all now sorted. Back, teeth, saddle fit problems, ulcers etc. 18 months later she is now in a super happy place and generally a whole new pony. The final piece of the jigsaw is the bit. I have tried lots, snaffles, gags, univerSal. All sorts. The bit I find she softens and accepts the best is a cheap shires blue sweet iron straight bar snaffle with Mullen......but, she cocks her head to the side and generally evades it. Did it this morning so I put her bitless bridle on and she was fab straight away. She doesn’t soften and round in quite the same way but does ride beautifully straight and generally very calm. All well and good in the school and hacking but she is bat shit crazy jumping and there is no possible way I can jump her in it. Now, some of her bat shit craziness may well be memory from the past when she had pain from saddle/ulcer etc and with re training she may well calm down eventually. In the meantime though, does anyone have any bit suggestions? I think she has a fairly sensitive mouth, short lips and a rather fat tongue. I will not clamp her mouth shut with a flash as I think this just heightens her issues. I have a specialist coming but she can’t get to me until Mid May. I am going xc on Sunday and would dearly love some brakes....am also going to take the bitless bridle to see how we get on ? but not particularly hopeful on that front! Any suggestions hugely appreciated. Thank you ?

Just to say, my problem is not that she buggars off with me, it’s that she leans on the bit and pulls me out of my seat....a horrid position to be in when charging full speed at solid fences! She can also be a dirty stopper and I have been known to fly through the air (multiple times in one day if she really hates that fence.....water trays in particular ?).

My lady loves her ported Uttoxeter Kimblewick - she is very sensitive and has a small mouth & large tongue so has very little room for a bit - the port gives her this & the slots on the Uttoxeter might give options for the control you might need too ?
