Well last night I was bitten on the back by the horse in the stable next to mine.

He was tethered outside his stable and I was bending over to get my grooming kit out of my tack box and the next thing I know is I have the most excruitating pain in the middle of my shoulder blades as he has tried to take a lump out of me. Someone saw him do it and said it looked really nasty, ears laid back and all.

So I now have a really, really sore back from the bite. It broke the skin a little so I am at a loss as to if I should put anything on it or not.

More importantly though is the fact that I got bit at all. I mean this horse knows me really well, is normally friendly and affectionate and has been handled by me many, many times. I can't understand what would have prompted him to do that. Any ideas anyone as my OH thinks that there "must" be a reason?

Could have been a fly or midge bugging him perhaps? Who knows, but thats something to tell your OH.

Hope you growled at the horse! I wouldn't worry too much if it was a one off and not the norm, but would literally watch your back around him!

Re treating it, its probably bruised a bit, so sore. I would leave it if you can. Hope ayou feel better.x

Poor you - ouch!!
My only guess is that he mistook you or your actions for something and was protecting his patch. He probably only meant to threaten, but accidently caught you harder than he intended. Good natured, kind horses don't 'bite and mean it' for nothing.
On the other hand, maybe something on him hurts and as you were the closest thing to him at that moment (maybe he got stung or has a pulled muscle for example???) he took it that you hurt him, so he retaliated.
Hope you feel better soon. Get some arnica. - help with the bruising.

Ah never thought of arnica, thanks for that :)

I have a tea tree/arnica roll on at the yard that I am sure my horse won't mind me borrowing!
