I don't get on here much anymore but thought would check in with news of Buzz, and reports of new horseness.
Some of you may remember Buzz and his cancer battle....very sadly, in February the evidence of a secondary growth showed that it was likely the cancer has returned. There were limited options available to us (very experimental, invasive chemo, more surgery, neither of which would be curative), so with a very heavy heart the vet and I (both in tears) decided to stop treating him. He was a trojan throughout multiple radiotherapies and surgeries, and for a while he was able to return to 'normal' but as soon as things started to go wrong, I knew that it was time to stop. However, he is still comfortable, and still very much his happy, perky, cheeky self. I retired him to grass a couple of months ago, and he is now living the life of Riley....not sure what will happen medium to long term, but my only goal is keeping him happy and comfortable, which he is at the moment. I still see him as much as I did before, but it's bittersweet after everything that's happened. He is looking amazing though, which is reassuring.
He doesn't quite get this 'roughed off' thing :p

Around the same time, prompted by the empty stable, and an opportunity to take my 7.5 ton test and buy a lorry, I set out looking for horse number 2. My list was quite specific, mainly as whatever I bought had enormous shoes to fill, literally and emotionally. So my search for a young-ish schoolmaster (!) was on. Obviously I fell in love with the first one I tried :p He'd wintered off, and didn't look great (my first reaction was 'yuk') but riding him made me smile. The sellers weren't entirely ready to sell (he wasn't actively for sale), so we agreed on a 6 month loan with view to buy, and the owner doing a few events on him throughout the summer while I'm busy and getting to know him, to keep him active over the big stuff.
He's a 17.2hh selle francais (Quidam de Revel lines), 10 years old....went intermediate at a relatively young age when he was pro-owned, then went to a pony club home where he did everything from Open teams to rallies, chase me charlies and hunting.. He's one of these charming chaps who just seems happy to be alive....he lives to jump, and is easy to do in every way (I know that's said very often, but he really is).
He's eligible for BE downgrade, so once we've sealed the deal I'll apply, but in the meantime it's been a fun couple of months getting to know him, and getting my jumping legs back (which, it turns out, includes a spectacularly errant lower leg???!)....have even jumped my first ever hedge!

I was only thinking about you yesterday and wondered how Buzz was (couldn't think of his name). I am sorry to read of the problems with Buzz but you are a very brave lady and Buzz is extremely lucky to have you. He looks very well and happy and that is what it is all about for however long it lasts. I know how you feel as we spent 10.5k trying to save Marley last year but in the end had to give up, the dreaded E Coli had destroyed his gut.

Your new horse looks lovely and I wish you all the luck in the world with him and its lovely that you can have a 6 month trial to get used to him. I know you have mentioned in the past that you go to Oldencraig, when, if ever, I find a new horse (its 10 months now looking) I may well see you there,

The very best of luck for the future and for Buzz, I will be thinking of you. K xxx

Sorry to hear about Buzz, you put such a lot of work into him and it shows - he looks fabulous. I hope he has a happy retirement, regardless of how long it lasts. He is lucky to have you!

Good luck with the new boy, he is lovely. Please keep us updated on them both.

Thank you all. The Buzz situation still continues to break my heart on a regular basis, but all I can focus on is how well he is on a daily basis....and at the moment he looks and acts like he's full of the joys of spring. I go down to feed him and will hear him thundering over the hill bucking and farting, he's got a girlfriend who he adores, and bribes the other horses to remove his fly mask regularly.

I'm so sorry to read about Buzz. You (and the vets) did an amazing job with him last year. He looks absolutely incredible in his retirement though!
Your new boy looks like a lot of fun :)

I think it was a case of always being driven by him and what he was comfortable with, and none of us felt it was fair to start more invasive treatment when there was no guarantee of a good outcome. The vets were always on the same page as me thankfully, and still text me every couple of weeks to ask about his progress.
The new boy isn't quite as big a character (yet) but he's been great for my confidence, and I'm having lots of fun taking him out on my own in the new lorry. They're both very calm and laid back characters, which makes life a bit easier....I have very limited free time, so can't be doing with high-maintenance ponies :p

So, so sorry about Buzz, he is an absolute credit to you, I really hope he flourishes in retirement.

Your new boy looks very smart, hope you have a fun summer with him :)

How disappointing and frustrating, I so hope Buzz has a long retirement.

Selle Francias are lovely horses and if yours gives you as much fun and success as mine has for me, you will be a very happy lady.Good luck.

So sorry to hear about Buzz, I was only thinking about him the other day. He looks fab thou and I hope he has a lovely long retirement. I think we have the same vets so I know how good they would have been and how upset.
Not sure what it is about gingers that get others to take off fly masks as mine regularly used to be missing his!

Your new boy looks lovely, do you know much more about his breeding? Q was the same lines and had a very heavy dose of Selle Francsais in him so just being curious as he is a lovely stamp.
I am slightly envious that you had such good luck finding one first time out, I was very lucky as Q was the first one I tried after my mare but having no luck this time round! Is so hard when they are such big characters but I do think there is always one out there so it’s lovely to see you out enjoying yourself after everything you did for Buzz.

He's by Kashmir Van Schuttershof (Nabab De Reve) , out of Kalipso Du Thin (BACUS DE NOUVOLIEU)....they don't mean a lot to me but I know diddly squat about SF breeding :p I love the tail though, apparently the arab type lift is really common to the breed?!

Very sorry to hear that the long term prognosis is not good. That must be very difficult to deal with, having that in your mind. Hats off to you. But he looks ever so well in his retirement : )

New chap looks lovely too! : )

Ah Q was by Quantum by Quidam de Revel, he was out of a mare with Cartargo lines but can't remember off the top of my head. He was Holstiener but his sire side held mostly SF lines so he was very leggy, got mistaken for a TB on a few occasions, normally when he was messing about but he couldn't gallop for toffee! I get that the SF was very much the French tb so I can understand the tail lift.

I didn't know much but it was intresting to look into especially some of the stuff I found out about his sire.
In the end I don't think it matters much, I know now I don't really look at breeding even with mares, I'd rather know its not going to drop me on my head!

Such a shame about Buzz. He does look happy & well, though, so here's hoping he has a nice comfortable retirement. New boy looks cracking too. Enjoy!

Congratulations on new horseness! :) I wish Buzz a long and happy retirement. It's probably foolish to hope for a miracle, but one does so, nevertheless.

Buzz is looking fantastic and sounds as though he is happy and enjoying his retirement, and that is the best of such a sad situation. Let's hope he has lots of time to be naughty with his friends. Your new boy looks great and I hope you have lots of fun together x

Sad news re Buzz but he does look amazing (and well). At least he can live a happy retirement with you watching over him.

The new horse looks fab too - all the best with him.

I'm not on here very often either but I have always followed your journey with Buzz. I am so sorry to hear of his latest prognosis and can't begin to imagine how you must have felt. He is certainly looking very well and happy though, as other posters have said he is a credit to you and I hope he has a lovely summer with his fieldmates.

Your new horse looks fantastic too - best of luck with him!

Tash x

O no poor Buzz :(
I'm sure you know how much everyone on HHO was routing for you and Buzz.

You have gone above and beyond what most owners would to help him. I hope you get to enjoy Buzz for as long as possible even if he is now a gentleman of leisure :)

Hope you have great times ahead with your new horse, who is gorgeous by the way!
