Sorry, it's a bit of a long and rambly essay, trying to get my head together..

I've been having trouble finding the brakes on my mare... I've had her since March, and before I had her, she was ridden in a single-jointed hanging-cheek snaffle with no problems. However her ol owner didn't ride in any open fields, show jump as much as i do with her, ride out in groups larger than two. I do dressage in the snaffle she came in, and she oes that nicely.

I don't tend to notice when I ride her, as I know it takes much longer than it should do to slow her, and i have kind of got use to it now. However, when my mum popped on her for a go on the beach, she said that when she came to slow her, the pace didn't slow, but her neck got shorter and shorter.

Is this her "taking hold" of the bit? When we went for a very fast hack around the UK Chasers Course at camp, she took hold of the bit on regular occasions and tried to tank off. This is when she is ridden in a happy mouth french-link three-ring gag on the second hole.

She hardly ever takes hold of the bit when she has the french link mouthpiece as opposed to the happy mouth single jointed mouthpiece, which I also had her in, on a three-ring.

Recently, I've been finding the second ring on the gag a bit too harsh, an she has also been napping badly.. Do you think that this is related?

Do you think a waterford would benefit my horse?

Or are there any other suggestions?

(Sorry if there's any letter D's missing, my keyboard isn't working properly...)

My daughter has been suffering abit with this on her pony. just gets a wee bit excited on open area hacks and xc, she was ridden in a single jointed dutch gag on the second ring down and once out xc had to put it on the last ring, we got intouch with shop4bits for some advice and they advised us trying the dutch gag with a waterford mouthpiece, we've had her in this bit for two weeks now, and what a transformation, even xc she just cant tank off, daughter thought it was amazing so fingers crossed we have found our magic bit. lol

That's really helpful, thanks

I don't actually think that my mare is very strong, but rather that she takes hold of the bit... Cheers! I think that I will probably get intouch with Shop4bits
