Ok - another showing question.

Going to county show next month - need to look 'pro' - lol...:)
Currently Moo in a fulmer french link, have been looking at pelhams for the showing classes, and alot have the mullen mouth with port? Are these a mild bit - I assume due to the port they can offer more tounge releif, or do I stick with a french link?

Cheers

Depends how your horse goes I suppose. Not much help there. Can you get to a local show before to try out and see which one is the best?

I am a big fan of pelhams. The most mild pelham is the mullen mouth followed by the port mouth, followed by french link/lozenge followed by single jointed.

Ride off the top/snaffle rein and the lower curb rein is only used when required.

If your horse has a big fleshy tongue and lips, I recommend the mullen stainless steel bit. Also remember to have a lip strap too.

If your horse is normally ridden in a French Link, I would try a french link pelham. It would have almost the same action when ridden on the snaffle rein.

Also if you are going to use it for showing only I would look a a 'rubgy pelham' which has shanks which make it look like a double bridle when it is on.

If you are not used to riding with 2 reins you definately need to get one and do lots of practice as soon as possible, it's really easy to get in a pickle when you first start.

I have a rugby pelham french link, use it with a sliphead (to hold it in place and look the part!) Iv used mine in a number of different horses now, all ride in different snaffles for riding school purposes, and none of them have even blinked an eye at being moved on to this!

Definetly get a crack on to practice as shazz says, tangles are REALLY EASY!!!!!!!! lol

The reins, I have half rubber on the top, and REALLY skinny leather ones on the curb! I also have a leather lip strap (I think thats what its called) to link through the curb chain to hold it and make it look neater!!

Good luck
