OK Sid has been ridden in a full cheek french link since I got him, this was particularly useful for dealing with the one-sidedness, it's advised as a good bit for 'babies' and he mouths in it quite nicely - however I have two questions....
(1) is there another bit that would make it easier for me to get him to 'round up' & go 'on the bit' (or is this simply cheating as he will do this for my YO in his regular bit...(don't worry won't get offended if you tell me to stop trying to 'cheat'!). We are forward and occasionally when I am least expecting it he will give me half an arena length of nice work but it's not a regular occurrence.
(2) I am getting to the stage where I'm coming to realise that when jumping/out in public anywhere 'forward' is not an issue, his bald patches are no longer bald (god bless cornucrescine) and even in the arena at home I don't need half as much leg to get him going forward, but there are definitely more occasions when I feel like I need more control - out jumping they always have to tell me to go 'out the other gate please' as I am careering round the arena trying to stop after we have jumped our round, it's a tad embarassing - next person is getting ready to jump & I'm not stopped yet!
And obviously if there's a magic bit out there that would encourage him to be on the bit more AND give me brakes when I need them then....wooo hoooo
(not holding my breath & will freely admit my bitting knowledge & understanding is fairly minimal!!)
PS He grinds his teeth a bit - usually at the start of a session or in a new situation. He is doing it a lot less than he used to (has had teeth/back etc. checked) but it's still something to bear in mind
