Lil really likes her pelham with a small port in it but gnashes her teeth when I do flat work in her french link hanging cheek.

Would it make sense to try a straight bar hanging cheek? I'm not sure whether to go for a mullen mouth or a port? The ported hanging cheeks look like they have a huge lump in the middle. I'd really like a myler but the budget just won't stretch to that atm!

Really, good thing I didn't buy one then! Presumably I'm alright with a mullen mouth hanging cheek?

I am interested as to why she likes the pelham so much (not a criticism) - does she have a large tongue/small mouth? Mine is a nightmare as he has a huge thick tongue (still doorstep shaped from how he was bitted previously) and not much room in his mouth. For flatwork he alternates between a NS loose ring and a hanging snaffle - think they have nodules but can't remember for both - his gag does. It might be worth calling someone like the bit bank for advice or even see if you can get a few people together to make a clinic worth while. That way you get to try a variety before you buy! (although most bit places will let you try the bit and refund if it isn't suitable). I have had my boy for 5 years and he is still changing so we still keep an eye on the bit situation to keep his lordship happy.

I don't honestly know why she likes the pelham so much. All I know is that when I ride her in a pelham whether I take a contact or whether I ride on the buckle end she foams loads and is really soft and responsive.

In her flatwork bits so far she has always gnashed and tried to open her mouth to evade.

Her tongue and mouth both look quite normal to me but then I don't really know what I'm looking for?
