My pony has been working in a simple eggbutt snaffle for a few months now and he can go quite nicely in it. He is a 20yr old ex-showjumper (acts like a 6 yr old) and has obviously been wrenched into an outline in the past as his head naturally rocks from side to side as he walks and he has a very hard mouth. When I first got him, he would also be very heavy but he is coming out of that :D

He also rests on my right rein a lot. This is why I have him in a fixed ring - he leans and pinches himself on the loose ring snaffles.

After about half an hour of schooling he can try to grab the bit and poke his nose up in the air.

I can now get him back together after he has stretched which has been an achievement (once he's finished, he's FINISHED.) hehe

The new problem that I am having is that when he begin to carry himself and is lighter in my hand he often gets his tongue over the bit.

He already has a flash on and I am in need of a BIT of guidance (sorry about that!!!)

I have swapped to a french link eggbutt for now to see if he prefers that but have also been looking at the Myler Comfort 02 Eggbutt

Advice appreciated!

Make sure the bit is the correct height in his mouth as if it is too low he will easily be able to get his tongue over the bit.

Also, just a tip - you could use a loose ring with bit guards, then the bit won't be able to pinch him. This will stop him from leaning on your right rein.

Thank you, but I am 100% that its the right height in his mouth - I have a hatred of bits that are dangling or yanking!

I already use bit guards when I am jumping, I am thinking of more in the dressage arena :) many thanks though!
