bitting advice

I have just bought a new horse and need some advice in terms of bits. She hasnt been ridden for a while but with her previous owners, they normally rode her in a happy mouth loose ring or vulcanite pelham. I have put her in a rubber jointed snaffle, however she is very on the forehand and i find myself getting really bad shoulder ache and back ache where she is very strong. They said she is the same in any bit, hence they just kept her in the snaffle, however im wanting to compete her and want to know ive got control when going around a decent sized SJ track. Any ideas on what to try?

Not personally tried it myself, but I believe the Neue Schule Verbidend bit is good at lifting shoulders and lightening the front. If you phone their helpline and explain they can recommend a bit. They are quite pricey though.
