I have a 15 yr old Irish draught and I'm struggling with brakes at the moment.
When we turn for home she loses all brakes, if I take up a contact she throws her head around quite violently if I don't then she canters away, we do lots of circles but they don't helpas soon as she is facing home again she takes off. Will stop and stand without issue when going away from home.
Her back, saddle and teeth have all been done in the last 4 week's and no problems there. I know schooling is the key however at this moment in time we have to do a lot of road work and to be perfectly honest it is becoming dangerous so I'm looking at bits.
We can't hack out with more sensible horses as my only potential hacking partner has a 4 year old who has just been backed and don't want to give him any ideas!
I have been recommended either a wilkie or a kimblewick instead of our usual French link, what would others recommend as the next step up?
