I have a 5 yr old that is starting to get a bit strong when jumping. She is in a sweet iron & copper french link snaffle and a flash noseband. She isnt terrible and I dont want to over bit her, but I do need her to listen more coming into a fence! We have been XC schooling with reins on the big ring of a 3 ring gag and that did not improve control - it didnt really feel the right bit for her. Any suggestions for one notch up from a snaffle?

Maybe try a copper roller snaffle, my own goes really well in this and I've heard its a good bit for youngsters. It's supposed to stop them from grabbing hold of the bit so if this is a problem you have when jumping then it could be worth a try. I would say it's a little stronger than an eggbutt or loose ring snaffle.

Riding her on the big ring of a Dutch Gag wouldn't have felt any different because when ridden on the top ring, the gag has no leverage and so is therefore exactly the same as using a snaffle! You would be better to put the reins onto the 2nd ring (the one underneath the big one) This should give you more control. :)

I have just been converted to the wonder that is a kineton noseband.
My mare has a soft and sensitive mouth, but often thinks she knows best and ignores me (jumping especially) today I had a jumping lesson with the kineton on her. I had more control than I've had in a long time, she did open her mouth and shake her head a bit when I insisted she do as she was told, but I could completely ease off when she stopped pulling.
