Hi. I have a mare who when we brought her she was a bolting rearing machine and ive completely reschooled her, and she is a fantastic little pony, do anything asked of her and very safe, however she still gets extremely strong when it comes to faster work, such as canter and jumping. The more you try and pull her back the faster and faster she goes, so one day i decided id just give her a canter in a headcollar and she was excellent as she had nothing to fight against. So obviously had her teeth checked etc and they were fine, so decided that it was the bit she was resisting and put her in a hackamore. She rides really well in this and her canter is getting steadier and steadier each day. However now we wont to start doing some jumping competitions again over the summer but the hackamore doesnt offer the best stearing, so someone suggested that we combine the hackamore with a snaffle, and ride in double reins, so we can just use the snaffle to steer when we really need it. Has anyone else tried this???...

I think there was some discussion about a rider in Hickstead this year who did something similar?
Im sure someone else will remember what was said - it was in Latest News I think?

Yes I have done this many a time - if you can deal with double reins and have the hands for it, then I deffo recommend. Otherwise you could use one of the snaffle/hackamore combinations that are now on the market, although they are pricey!
