Bitting for peace of mind?

My horse is currently in a NS Tranz lozenge Eggbutt snaffle. He can get quite strong at times but is manageable in this bit.
I would like to take him hunting and XC schooling and I have no idea how strong he will get so have been considering getting a NS Universal for faster work.
Is it wrong to have a stronger bit for my peace of mind when doing new activities?
 
No its quite sensible!

I'd rather use a stronger bit lightly than be caught out hauling on a snaffle to avoid running into someone else's backside and being out of control isn't fun!

The only thing I would like to see is two reins used, so that you can have your standard snaffle rein and then call on brakes when required
 
I use these 2 bits on a strong horse.
The Universal gives me extra brakes and steering and as it is used with 2 reins allows for much more finesse in the aids. I'm not sure that it would be possible to use the Universal with roundings (not that I like them with any bit). I certainly prefer the Uni to the Dutch gag which my horse brought with her, again it allows for finer aids.
I certainly think that it is more sensible to use a different bit for hunting or any exciting activity, than to wish later that you had done.
 
Yes I think that if it gives you more confidence then go for it. You are more likely to be careful with him in the stronger one, ie you won't need to haul so much than if you were in your normal bit.

Plus if that gives you something less to worry about then you can concentrate on your riding and enjoying yourself!

That's exactly what I was thinking i.e. One less thing to worry about so I can concentrate on keeping my head together :D
I have quiet hands anyway but I do sometimes feel like I'm hauling on him to make him listen.
 
Definitely! At least you've thought about the pros and cons.

Anyway now you've decided, have fun hunting and xc schooling! Bet your horse will love trying something new.
