I've just got a new horse, an ID, shes only 6 and very green in the school apparently.
When I first rode her getting her home, put her in a jointed eggbutt snaffle which she hated, she was chomping and throwing her head up (but not down or sideways) every couple of strides. She isnt lame at all.
Changed bit to a rubber straight bar loose ring, lunged in it, absolutely fine, no sign of a shake/resistance whatsoever.
Rode in it, she was better but still every 7-10 strides she would throw her head up. Doesnt seem to be pain related (although will get dentist out asap as it wont do any harm).

Is there any bit that would be recommended or any technique etc? She seems to get a bit better as time goes on, as she settles, but doesnt completely stop at all.

It's very hard to advise without knowing the horse, but I think getting the dentist sounds like a good idea - will put your mind at ease if nothing else!

What bit was she ridden in before you bought her? When you lunged her in the straight bar was she in side reins (i.e. is it a contact rather than bitting issue)?

Some of the big ID types do take a little while to find their balance so if teeth are ok it may just be a case of treating her like a real baby and schooling from scratch to encourage her to take a contact.

:)

Saw her ridden in a full cheek snaffle (think it was a jointed metal mouthpiece too). Yes lunged her in side reins (v. loose, but still to mimic a contact), she wasnt bothered about it at all, absolutely no head shaking/nodding.
She also takes up the contact lovely and goes into a natural outline in between this 'nodding'.
