I have a 16.2 ISH, 5 yr old, we've been eventing all season and she's really starting to find her own confidence, only problem now is she now believes she can do it on her own and just pulls and hangs on me whilst out XC, we are currently in a Waterford and a grackle noseband, (I know some people hate waterfords but it has worked wonders), only now she's started getting strong again, I'm only 5ft2 and have little strength (happy to admit that!)
Just wondered if anyone out there had experienced the same, or has any advice?
Thanks.

She just sticks her head down, in all honesty she seems to be enjoying herself too much as is normally accompanied by a few bucks, ears pricked all time, we've had teeth, back, saddle checked and all ok.
Just wondered if there was a better bit out there to help with brakes?

If. She tucks her head in then this probs wont be right but how about a dutch gag.... A great bit imo it has worked wonders for me and my girl or if you only want a slight upgrade then try a waterford hanging cheek but try a dutch gag. Try it first on the bit ring (strength of a hanging cheek) then go down a hole if she is too strong

A dutch gag is a head lowerer so is the last thing you put on a horse that puts it's head down!

For a horse that put it's head down I would put a true gag on - Cheltenham gag. It's a head raiser and can (should) be ridden with two reins so that you can alter the effect of it - snaffle most of the time but the gag action is there when you need it.

I recommend the Myler combination bit - certainly worked for my girly - she knows she can't get away now because of the independent action of each side of the bit she knows she can't get hold and pull - I cried the first time I used it because it is so brilliant and it's actually kinder a lot of the more severe bits.

Forgive me if im wrong but i am pretty sure the dutch gag encourages the horse to raise its head??

Skydancer you are right. It is marketed as a head raiser but tbh having used one on many horses and currently riding in one I think it actually lowers the head tbh!!
Btw eriskayowner I said if it lowers its head then it wont be right.... Re read my comment
